12 rolls

Ingredients
  • 2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup (180ml) warm milk (100–110°F / 38–43°C)
  • 2 tbsp (25g) granulated sugar
  • 2½ cups (315g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup (130g) chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)
Instructions
  • In a bowl, combine yeast, warm milk, and sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  • Add flour, salt, softened butter, and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms. Knead for 5–7 minutes, then cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  • Roll dough into a ¼-inch (6mm) thick circle. Cut into 12 triangles. Place some chocolate on the wide end and roll up like a croissant.
  • Place on a lined baking sheet, cover loosely, and let rise 15–20 minutes.
  • Brush with egg wash. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 15–18 minutes until golden brown.
  • Cool slightly and enjoy warm or at room temp.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use high-quality baking chocolate or chocolate chips for the best melt and flavor.
  • If using crescent roll dough, seal edges well to keep chocolate from leaking.
  • For added flavor, sprinkle in a little cinnamon or sea salt before rolling.
  • These reheat well: just pop in a warm oven for 5 minutes to restore flakiness.
  • Best served warm, when the chocolate is soft and gooey inside.
  • Dust lightly with powdered sugar or drizzle with a little ganache or chocolate sauce for added elegance.
  • Pair with a cappuccino, hot chocolate, or chilled almond milk.
  • Serve alongside fresh fruit or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a plated dessert.
