Mississippi Mud Pie

Mississippi Mud Pie is the ultimate indulgence for chocolate lovers — a decadent dessert featuring a crisp chocolate crust, rich brownie-like filling, and silky pudding or ganache layer, often topped with whipped cream. Named after the thick, muddy banks of the Mississippi River, this Southern classic is bold, luscious, and unapologetically rich. It’s an ideal showstopper for holidays, celebrations, or anytime you’re craving serious chocolate comfort.

Ingredients

Crust:

  • 1 ½ cups (180g) chocolate cookie crumbs
  • 6 tbsp (85g) unsalted butter, melted

Filling:

  • 1 ½ cups (300g) granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp (24g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup (30g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup (170g) unsalted butter, melted

Topping:

  • 1 ½ cups (360ml) heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp (15g) powdered sugar
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder (optional)
Instructions
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Combine cookie crumbs and melted butter. Press evenly into a 9-inch pie dish. Bake for 8–10 minutes, then cool slightly.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt. Add eggs, vanilla, and melted butter; mix until smooth and glossy.
  • Pour the filling into the pre-baked crust. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the center is just set and slightly puffed.
  • Cool at room temperature, then chill for at least 2 hours.
  • Beat the cream and powdered sugar to stiff peaks. Top the chilled pie with whipped cream and chocolate shavings before serving.

Tips & Tricks

  • Let the pie cool completely before adding whipped cream or slicing — this helps layers set properly.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days — it often tastes better the next day!
  • For a cleaner slice, dip your knife in hot water and wipe between cuts.
  • Serve chilled or slightly warmed, depending on your preferred texture.
  • Top with a generous swirl of whipped cream, a sprinkle of cocoa powder, or chocolate shavings.
  • Pairs beautifully with fresh berries (like raspberries or cherries) for a pop of tartness.
  • Add a scoop of vanilla or coffee ice cream on the side to balance the richness.
